This isn’t a news site. I’ve no desire to be a news site either. But, as a comic geek and MCU fan, it’s impossible not to think about the news that came out Friday. Being a lover of the Guardians Of The Galaxy films, I’ve obviously been thinking about Disney firing James Gunn from Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 a lot. Writing often helps me sort all my feelings (one of the reasons I need to get back to journaling regularly…I miss it) so I figured I’d give it a go here. So, technically, this isn’t so much a reporting of the news as it is my reaction to the news. Continue reading

New American Resistance – March for Our Lives
I was honored yesterday to travel with a group of my students to Washington D.C. to participate in the March for Our Lives. Like the movement itself, the entire trip was their idea. They wanted to go. They organized it. They talked to administration. They found chaperones. They figured out the busing and worked to raise the money. I was there because they asked me to chaperone and I was proud to march alongside them. I’ve had people asking me what it was like or about pictures I took or things like that. At the end of the day, I seemed to be able to say more with this short reflection than I could with anything I’d put on a Twitter or Facebook post. Continue reading
New American Resistance – 24 September
I can’t believe I’m writing about health care again. I really can’t. I feel a weariness in me each time I see the GOP’s moving again to steal people’s coverage, leaving so many to die. But we’ve fought this fight and won before. So we have to marshal our voices and do it again. There’s also the DREAMERS Act of 2017, the United Nations, tensions with North Korea… As usual, this series aims to a) help us stay informed on the events unfolding in America and b) urge readers to add their voice to the chorus calling out for justice. We must be aware. We must be vocal. We must be active. We must be loving. This is how we will triumph and how we will transform our lives, our nation, and our world. Continue reading
New American Resistance – 6 September
Congress is back in session and my little Resistance-writing recess has come to an end as well. Unfortunately the chaos of the world we’re living in (also called “the news”) hasn’t taken a break. That can make it hard to know where to pick one of these up after a hiatus. However, the Trump Administration’s move to end DACA and once again disregard the basic rights to life and dignity of human beings can’t go undiscussed. So we’ve got our starting point! As usual, this series aims to a) help us stay informed on the events unfolding in America and b) urge readers to add their voice to the chorus calling out for justice. We must be aware. We must be vocal. We must be active. We must be loving. This is how we will triumph and how we will transform our lives, our nation, and our world. Continue reading
New American Resistance – Heather Heyer: Victim of Charlottesville Vehicular Hate Crime was a Beautiful Hero
By Green Onion of The Green Onion Blog
It has been a while since Michael asked if I would care to add a post to his continuing New American Resistance series. First off, of course I was honoured. I understood that he wanted to add perspectives and fresh views to his important series but, what the heck do you write that Michael doesn’t word more elegantly already. As a Canadian, do I add my voice to the resistance with my outside views on President Clump? Do I share what is important for us north of the border to pay attention to? I didn’t know, I still kind of don’t… Continue reading
Reading Captain America #25 in the Wake of Charlottesville
Last week Nick Spencer delivered one of Secret Empire’s most important pieces yet in Captain America #25. I knew when I read it, I’d be writing about it. But I hadn’t expected to do so this quickly. However, as I watched the news unfold on Saturday, I couldn’t get this issue out of my mind. The comic, dropping “Sam Wilson” from the title with this issue, is simply Captain America once more. The narrative juxtaposes the approach of two very different Captain Americas. The allegory is clear. Who do we choose? Who are we? It’s a question calling each reader to deep contemplation on a personal and national level, a question I ask myself daily. Continue reading
New American Resistance – 7 August
It was Barack Obama’s birthday on 4 August! To celebrate, I have a couple clips here to remind us of what a classy, intelligent leader he was. They also bring some humor too. However, there’s also important news we need to try and process so we can’t get lost in nostalgia. Let’s get to it!
New American Resistance – 31 July
Okay, this post won’t be as lengthy as usual. To be honest, I’m still a little emotionally exhausted from all the late nights with the health care vote last week. But I didn’t want the series to drop off just because I was a little tired so here we go.
New American Resistance – 26 June
I’m returning to form this week, after last week’s more personal and theological reflection on the Kingdom of God and how it affects my personal politics. As always, it seems there’s a lot to cover. Let’s see…ah, the GOP’s still trying to rob many of the fundamental human right of health care in the name of profit and power. That being said, let’s get to it shall we? This series aims to a) help us stay informed on the events unfolding in America and b) urge readers to add their voice to the chorus calling out for justice. We must be aware. We must be vocal. We must be active. We must be loving. This is how we will triumph and how we will transform our lives, our nation, and our world. Continue reading
New American Resistance – 23 May
Well, it was a…wild week last week, to say the least. And this week the ol’ Man of Orange is travelling abroad. Given everything that began coming to light last week there’s been a lot of talk about impeachment and what exactly may be coming down the line for the Trump Administration. To try and offer some clarification, this week I’m spotlighting some pieces to help explain, through history and the Constitution, what impeachment is, what’s going on now, and what we might be able to expect from the future.
