As soon as I saw Black Widow last summer I felt this thought wiggling around in my brain. Is it…? Could it be…? Is…is Black Widow now my favorite Marvel movie?! Because I’m me, I certainly couldn’t say definitively. First, I’m not the type of person who can throw a term like “favorite” around lightly. To say I like or love something is one thing. But to say it’s “my favorite” or “the best” or “the greatest” of all-time? That requires a lot of thoughtful discernment for me. Second, there’s this odd reaction/habit within our culture, especially within our fandom cultures, where whatever is newest is automatically the best. It’s new! It’s shiny! It’s the best ever!!! So, while that’s never been me, I wanted to be sure I wasn’t having that sort of reaction when I first saw Black Widow on July 8th. I said I loved it. I said it was easily one of the best films the MCU has to offer. And I said it may be my all-time favorite movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Still, I needed time before I could say that with any certainty. Now I know. Black Widow is the best Marvel movie of all-time! And here’s why…

The Matrix: Resurrections – A Trailer and some Familiar Philosophical Feelings
Ok, so first, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Second, so there’s a trailer for the new Matrix movie. I’ll be honest, I got a little nostalgic and a whole helluva lot excited when I watched it. After Jeff messaged me about it, I may’ve spent my entire lunch break watching it about fifteen times. Who can say for sure? But was my lunch break even real in the first place?? That seems like the bigger question we should focus on before we judge how I used the time. ANYWAY, as I like to do when a trailer drops which a) I’m particularly excited about, b) generates some serious feels – good, bad, or indifferent – in me, or c) both, I figured I’d write about it. Should I do the obligatory line about taking the red or blue pill as you decide if you want to read this? I don’t know…it feels lazy. It’s classic, yes, but also maybe too easy? Hmm. Ok, let’s skip the low hanging fruit and just dive in!
My MCU Gold Standard
I will be forever grateful for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In addition to bringing so many of my favorite characters to life in such fun and faithful ways, it also served as my main connection to all the superheroes I loved as a child. During my seventeen year absence from reading comics, the MCU let me grab glimpses into the lives of all my favorite characters. It felt like coming home whenever I’d get to see Thor or Iron Man do their thing :). So no one was more surprised than I when my favorite film in the MCU became (and still is!) the one about a ragtag band of space misfits that I’d never even heard of before. That’s right Guardians of the Galaxy, I love you. And this is my proclamation of undying affection! Continue reading
