I’ve written a piece for the Star Wars fansite Future Of The Force! It’s about Marvel’s Lando miniseries and how it adds depth and beauty to the character of Lobot and his relationship with Lando. I also talk about how I love all these additional Star Wars stories – be they from the Expanded Universe or the new Disney Canon – because they continue to expand the universe George Lucas created in so many ways. I’m excited to be contributing to Future of the Force and I’d appreciate your clicking this handy little link and bouncing over there to give the piece a read. Please and thank you!
There was no way to control my excitement and anticipation as the release date for The Force Awakens drew near at the end of 2015. I tried but this was the first time in thirty years Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie, Artoo, and Threepio would be together again in a new adventure on the BIG SCREEN. As the credits rolled and the lights in the theatre came up…I wasn’t feeling what I wanted to feel. David, Kalie, Jeff, Hannah, and I all stood around in the parking lot after our initial screening staring at each other until Hannah finally said what I was feeling too, “I kind of hated it.” It didn’t feel like Star Wars to me. The absence of Lucas’ vision was painfully evident. BUT I’ve carried this resentment long enough. It’s time for me to let go and celebrate what’s right with The Force Awakens. Continue reading
I left my second screening of Rogue One yesterday. I’m still overwhelmed by feelings today. Of course I’ve no clear thoughts or insightful analysis to offer yet. But I wanted to write about why the film impressed me so much (obviously without spoilers). Like many, Star Wars is something very near and dear to my heart. But I went in with my expectations as reasonably low as I could manage. The Disney Canon has disappointed me before. However, I can feel the Force freely flowing around me now as a result of seeing Rogue One! THIS is exactly what I’d been hoping the Disney Canon could give me. Continue reading
A year ago today, Marvel Comics released the first issue of the Star Wars: Shattered Empire miniseries. It was an exciting and central piece of Disney’s “Journey to The Force Awakens” celebration. With the old Expanded Universe of stories “thrown out,” this was our first look at the new Disney Canon’s version of what happened immediately after the Battle of Endor. In the year that’s followed I’ve read seventy comics, eleven novels (five were YA), watched two full seasons of Star Wars: Rebels and (obviously!) seen The Force Awakens (a ridiculous nine times in theatres). I’ve approached the Disney Canon excitedly, eager to see their new vision of a post-Return Of The Jedi universe…and, honestly, I’ve been disappointed. For me, it’s not as good as the old EU. I’m sad, a little frustrated, and (perhaps weirdly) still very hopeful. Continue reading
For a lifelong fan of comic books and a lover of Star Wars what I’m about to say surprises even me. I just finished reading the Dark Empire miniseries for the first time. For real. How has it taken me so long to read this?!? I can absolutely see why this is considered such a classic! With all this excitement running through my being I thought it would be an excellent time to engage in an EPIC lightsaber duel. However, given the fact that my lightsabers are all the way downstairs and I’m lacking an opponent at the moment, I figured I’d talk about Star Wars, comics, canon, and the Expanded Universe instead. Continue reading
In the fall of 2015, it was Star Wars that finally brought me back to the world of comic collecting after my seventeen year absence. Admittedly it felt a little weird returning to Books Galore after so long a time away. I felt a bit out of place, like coming home to find everything you remember similar…yet different. But the oddity of my return was soon eclipsed by feelings of excitement. I was back! I was reading comics again! Yay! And I was excited (after Jeff’s constant urging) to explore the Star Wars stories Marvel was adding to the new Disney Canon. Of all their comics, I was most excited for Darth Vader. As the months rolled by however, I found myself wrapped in a passionate yet frustrating relationship with the Dark Lord of the Sith. Continue reading
