I left my second screening of Rogue One yesterday. I’m still overwhelmed by feelings today. Of course I’ve no clear thoughts or insightful analysis to offer yet. But I wanted to write about why the film impressed me so much (obviously without spoilers). Like many, Star Wars is something very near and dear to my heart. But I went in with my expectations as reasonably low as I could manage. The Disney Canon has disappointed me before. However, I can feel the Force freely flowing around me now as a result of seeing Rogue One! THIS is exactly what I’d been hoping the Disney Canon could give me. Continue reading

Anakin’s Fall and the Prequels’ Worth
I’ve never fully understood why George Lucas’ Prequel Trilogy is such a divisive topic among Star Wars fans, generating more ire than makes any sense to me. But it turns out, I’m not the only one who’s confused! On 14 September, Ministry of Cinema will release their new documentary The Prequels Strike Back digitally on Amazon, YouTube, and VHX. The film follows one fan on a cross-country trek to try and unravel why people hate these films as much as they do…and see if perhaps there’s more merit to the Prequels than some give them credit for. Inspired (and excited!) by this week’s upcoming documentary, I figured I’d talk about an oft maligned aspect of the Prequels that I adore – the character of Anakin Skywalker. Continue reading
Darth Vader #24 – A Moving Masterpiece
I wasn’t planning to write this post. I’m normally not one for single issue reviews or reflections. But when I read Darth Vader #24 on Wednesday I did something I’ve never done with a comic…I immediately flipped to the front to read it again. And since then, the story’s been bouncing around in my head. I can’t stop thinking about it. So I figured I’d write about it. Don’t worry, if you haven’t read it, there’s spoiler protection. And if you have (or are wild enough not to care about spoilers), I’ll reflect with detail on why the specifics of the issue are so important to me too. Continue reading
My on again/off again Relationship with Darth Vader
In the fall of 2015, it was Star Wars that finally brought me back to the world of comic collecting after my seventeen year absence. Admittedly it felt a little weird returning to Books Galore after so long a time away. I felt a bit out of place, like coming home to find everything you remember similar…yet different. But the oddity of my return was soon eclipsed by feelings of excitement. I was back! I was reading comics again! Yay! And I was excited (after Jeff’s constant urging) to explore the Star Wars stories Marvel was adding to the new Disney Canon. Of all their comics, I was most excited for Darth Vader. As the months rolled by however, I found myself wrapped in a passionate yet frustrating relationship with the Dark Lord of the Sith. Continue reading
Top Five Wednesday – Father Figures!
As I was perusing the blogosphere this afternoon something exciting happened! Thanks to Nancy over at Graphic Novelty 2 and Heather from Heather Hobbs – A Book Blog, I learned that “Top Five Wednesday” is not only a thing, but an exciting thing at that! (It’s worth noting I’ve seen a lot of brilliant Top Five lists online…I’m sure a lot of them were on Wednesday too. Buuuut I didn’t “get it” until I saw Nancy and Heather’s posts a few moments apart. This is embarrassing…let’s not broadcast it.) So I figured I’d join the ol’ group over at Goodreads myself and join the fun. With it being Father’s Day this weekend, the post was to be on your Top Five Favorite Literary Fathers. (Okay, okay, it’s technically Thursday. But I just saw this now! So shhhh…let’s not broadcast this either. I promise next week the post will be written and posted on Wednesday.) With that being said, let’s look at some great dads! Continue reading
