Four years ago I wrote a piece titled, “Captain America and the Defense of the American Dream.” I posted it on Inauguration Day and it considered how we, as a nation, should respond to Trump’s election, using Captain America as the frame for analysis. It examined Captain America as a character, his history, and what lessons he could offer when the world we thought we knew was turned so completely upside down. Now, four years later, Joe Biden is about to be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States alongside Kamala Harris – the first woman, first Woman of Color, first Indian America, and the first Asian American to hold the office of Vice President. I find myself looking to Captain America once again, to the brilliant narrative Ta-Nehisi Coates’ has been telling in Captain America since July 2018, as I try to process the last four years and consider my roll in the future.

New American Resistance – 17 July
Despite the craziness with new Russian reveals (and there is a lot of it) and the ever-constant fight to protect health care, I took last week off in honor of my birthday. But we’re back this week…and we must keep it up. As usual, this series aims to a) help us stay informed on the events unfolding in America and b) urge readers to add their voice to the chorus calling out for justice. We must be aware. We must be vocal. We must be active. We must be loving. This is how we will triumph and how we will transform our lives, our nation, and our world. Continue reading
New American Resistance – 3 July
Alright, so Congress is on recess all week. The Senate doesn’t resume until the 10th and the House is out until the 11th. However, the egregious assault on our health care continues so I figured we’d do the post anyway. Also, even if they are out of their D.C. offices, you can (and should!) feel free to call all their offices and leave messages about how important health care is.
New American Resistance – A Win!
This post won’t be like the others in the series. Rather, this is a short celebration/reflection on our win last week. The GOP tried to push forward their bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. It was a hasty move, driven by their desire to spite Obama, anchored in a dangerous plan that would rob millions of their health care. But something happened. First the vote was delayed from Thursday to Friday and then the bill was pulled because they knew they didn’t have the votes to get it passed. This is proof that all of our voices calling out (both liberal and conservative alike on this issue) and saying it wasn’t the right move were heard. When we struggle with our ability to bring about change, we need to remember this moment. We spoke out. We were heard. And it affected what happened. This is an important victory!!! This is why we need to stay informed and vocal. Power to the people! Continue reading
New American Resistance – 6 March
I took a break from this series last week. I had a lot of grading I needed to do but I also needed a little downtime to avoid activist burnout. These pieces take a lot out of me emotionally. But, even though I was on break the Mad King Donnie was not. So let’s jump back into things! This weekly series aims to a) help us stay informed on the events unfolding in America and b) urge readers to add their voice to the chorus calling out for justice. We must be aware. We must be vocal. We must be active. We must be loving. This is how we will triumph and how we will transform our lives, our nation, and our world. Continue reading
Loki wants your VOTE…and he’s got mine!
This week the first issue of Christopher Hasting and Langdon Foss’ new monthly title Vote Loki was released. I bought it because I was very intrigued at what the series could/would be…and after reading the first five pages I knew it would take the last free spot in my monthly file! I recently dropped the bi-monthly Deadpool main title for Spider-Man/Deadpool and had a free spot (to keep myself at ten a month). But it’s free no more! In the hands of Christopher Hasting’s insightful writing, the Trickster god’s campaign can’t be missed. Continue reading
