Okay, I’ll keep this short. I don’t want you to read; I want you to act. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will vote to end net neutrality in the coming weeks. With Ajit Pai at the helm, the anti-neutrality votes have a 3-2 edge. If you are reading this and you are American this will directly affect you. It will affect you in an even more personal way if you’re a blogger. If this passes we will all be paying for the internet and the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will bundle websites as cable companies bundle channels. We have roughly three weeks to stop this.
WE NEED TO CALL AND KEEP CALLING! Here’s a link to Battle for the Net which will give you all the links you need to call those you should to speak out against this. And here’s a link to 5 Calls.org (care of The Imperial Talker) that helps you see who specifically to call on a variety of issues, including net neutrality. Call and let those you speak to know you support net neutrality and are opposed to ending it.
Where do you think the end of net neutrality will leaves us, little free WordPress bloggers hmm? According to Forbes, “If net neutrality goes away, no longer will anyone be able to set up a website and turn it into a thriving business by offering popular content. They’ll first need to raise money to pay the ISPs, or else face being throttled back before their business even has a chance.” Now, we’ve beaten this before, “When previous FCC commissioner Tom Wheeler proposed to weaken net neutrality just a couple of years ago, the ensuing public outcry convinced him to reverse himself, resulting in a strong ruling in 2015 preserving neutrality.”
If a picture helps make it clearer, here’s what your internet experience will look like (spoiler, it’ll be just like cable!) without net neutrality (graphic c/o Forbes):
Does anyone really want to live like this? Again, WE NEED TO CALL AND KEEP CALLING! Here’s a link to Battle for the Net which will give you all the links you need to call those you should to speak out against this. And here’s a link to 5 Calls.org (care of The Imperial Talker) that helps you see who specifically to call on a variety of issues, including net neutrality. The annihilation of Net Neutrality is just another step in the Trump Administration’s long, drawn out attack on Trump’s own base. Will this hurt people like you and me? Yeah, it will. But what is so damn confounding is how his own base will suffer because of this, and how they do not even see it. I will fight this idiotic decision by the FCC to the bitter end, and I will do so on behalf of ALL Americans, but I will feel no remorse for Trump voters who have to pay more for the internet if this ends up going through. If they cannot see the folly in their choice after months of this nonsense then so be it.
